Colon - Barium Enema Preparation Instructions

Preparation Instructions PLEASE PURCHASE AT PHARMACY:

300 ML MAGNESIUM CITRATE (CITROMAG)
2 DULCOLAX TABLETS
1 DULCOLAX SUPPOSITORY 

Be sure to follow each step and complete all instructions for proper bower preparation, or the entire examination may have to be repeated.

**High fluid intake is essential to the success of this regimen. You must take a large glass (250 ml/8 oz) of fluid at the specified times. Drink only black coffee, plain tea, strained fruit juice, soft drinks or water at the times indicated. No milk or cream.

DIET REGIMEN TO BE FOLLOWED PRIOR TO EXAMINATION:
  1. 48 hours prior to exam ~ low residue foods only (for example: white bread, cream of wheat, butter, margarine, chicken, turkey, ham, meat which is not fried, all liquids).
    Avoid: fruit, vegetables, nuts, raisins, whole wheat products, cold cuts, cheeses, hot dogs, meat fats.
     
  2. 24 hours prior to exam ~ clear liquids only (for example: clear soup, bouillon, gelatin/jello, strained/clear fruit juice, plain tea/coffee,  clear soft drinks). No solid food permitted.
     
  3. Day before exam ~ begin bowel prep medications according to the following schedule:
     
    Noon - liquid lunch (clear soup, plain gelatin, fluid)
    4:00 pm - drink entire bottle of magnesium citrate (cold)
    5:00 pm - drink large glass of fluid (250 ml/8 oz)
    6:00 pm - liquid dinner (clear soup, plain gelatin, large glass fluid)
    7:00 pm - take dulcolax tablets with large glass of water
    8:00 pm - drink large glass of fluid 
    9:00 pm - drink large glass of fluid 
     
  4. Day of exam

    Two hours prior to exam insert dulcolax suppository into rectum as far as possible.
    Retain as long as comfort will permit (usually 10 - 15 minutes) before defecating.
Clear fluids may be continued until appointment time
If necessary, prescription medications may be taken with fluid.

 REPORT TO THE X-RAY CLINIC AT YOUR SCHEDULED TIME. YOUR EXAM WILL TAKE APPROX. 1 HOUR.

* If you are unable to keep your appointment, please give 24 hours notice
*Please arrange to leave your children at home, or have supervision
*Please present your medical card at the front desk on the day of your exam

Excellence in Clinical CareAfter the exam - you may resume your regular activities and diet. Please drink plenty of liquids to help flush the barium from your system. Stool will continue to have a whitish colour for a day or two. If you experience constipation, you may need to take a mild laxative. Your doctor will discuss the test results with you.
